Client Background: PhD Visa Renewal + Dependent Included<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Primary applicant: PhD student<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Secondary applicant: Spouse (dependent)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Visa type: Subclass 500 Student Visa (Higher Degree by Research)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Situation:\nThe client has already submitted their PhD thesis and is awaiting final examination results.\nAs the original visa was approaching expiry, a renewal was required to cover the post-submission period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Key point:\nIn this renewal, no additional visa application fee was requested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">II. The Most Surprising Part: The System Displayed \u201cAUD 0\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Primary applicant: AUD 0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dependent applicant: AUD 0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Total cost: AUD 0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">While this looks shocking at first, the reality is that PhD student visa renewals can, in certain circumstances, genuinely require no additional payment.\n\nThis is especially true when:\n\nthe renewal is from the same visa subclass to the same visa subclass,\n\nthere is no new COE issued, and\n\nthe study pathway has not been interrupted.\n\nIn such cases, a zero-fee outcome is possible and legitimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>III. Bridging Visa Applied Manually \u2014 But \u201cNothing Happened\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the visa expiry was approaching, we proceeded very cautiously:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00a0The new student visa application had already been lodged<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Due to COVID disruptions, the applicant had not commenced study strictly according to the original COE timeline<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0The applicant was onshore in Australia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A dependent applicant was included<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0<strong>In theory, a Bridging Visa A (BVA) should have been granted automatically<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>To be safe, we manually applied for a BVA.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, after several days:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00a0No changes appeared in ImmiAccount<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0No email notifications were received<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0The system remained completely silent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The manually applied BVA was not granted<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">There was no refusal, no request, no approval \u2014 nothing at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">IV. The Turning Point: Medical Completed \u2192 Visa Granted Almost Instantly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The true trigger point turned out to be one single step: the medical examination.\n\nOnce the medical was completed:\n\nthe process moved forward immediately\uff0c\n\nwithin the same day or a very short time after\uff0c\n\nthe visa was granted directly\uff0c\n\nThere were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">no requests for further documents\uff0c\n\nno additional enquiries\uff0c\n\nno \u201cfurther assessment in progress\u201d stage.\n\nThe case was simply finalised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>V. Key Takeaways for PhD Students<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">1. PhD Visa Renewal \u2260 Always Requires Additional Fees<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Especially when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>continuing the same degree pathway,\n\nno new COE is issued<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the extension is due to normal thesis submission or examination timelines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the documentation logic is clear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">A system-displayed AUD 0 is possible and not necessarily an error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">2. Bridging Visas Do Not Always Generate Immediate Feedback<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>sometimes the system auto-covers the situation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sometimes it waits for key documents (such as medicals)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">no response does not equal a problem<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Silence alone should not cause panic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. <\/strong><strong>Medical Examination Is Often the Final Trigger<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For PhD student visas in particular:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">the medical is frequently the last missing piece,\n\nonce the medical is completed, the case is often ready for decision<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medical completed = application
